Empty nesters play empty nesters in this smart two-hander full of humor and heart by Garret Jon Groenveld. Real life husband and wife John Walker (Greg) and Pamela Gaye Walker (Frances) are a couple at a crossroad on the Skywalk at the Grand Canyon. Their last daughter has just left the nest and Frances is about to drop a bombshell.

This past weekend, the hubby and I had a double date with another fun couple and we saw The Empty Nesters at the Zephyr Theatre in Hollywood, California. This hybrid dramedy centers around parents Greg and Frances who stop for a visit to the Grand Canyon, after dropping off their youngest child at college. Instead of embracing their newfound freedom, the reality sets in about the uncertainty of their next chapter.

If you’re anywhere near Los Angeles, DO see the play Empty Nesters, with performances through February 17. It portrays the Nestermoon from hell…a post-drop-off road trip to the highly metaphorical Grand Canyon Skywalk. There, the talented two-person cast (enhanced by some impressive digital sets) deals with the existential dilemma of who they are without kids, what they will do for the rest of their lives, and whether they should they even stay together.
LA Arts ONLINE (February 2019)
When a friend invited me to the opening night of The Empty Nesters, I was skeptical. I don’t have kids, and I wondered if I would be able to appreciate the show. I needn’t have worried. Written by Garret Jon Groenveld and performed by John (JW) Walker and Pamela Gaye Walker, the 75-minute play is engaging, funny, bittersweet, thoughtful, and uplifting.
The Larchmont Chronicle (February 2019)

The Empty Nesters is a universal story. It’s about relationships, and, like every good marriage—there’s lots of humor. That’s what makes this play starring John JW Walker and Pamela Gaye Walker so wonderful.

How could life be any better for John Walker. On Tuesday he was nominated for an Academy Award as one of the producers of Incredibles 2. And he has just completed the first weekend of performances on stage in The Empty Nesters with his wife, Pamela Gaye Walker. After a twenty year break from performing together, The Empty Nesters, written by Garret Jon Groenveld, gave the couple a chance to appear on stage together again. The play is now in performances at the Zephyr Theatre through February 17th.
Empty Nesters Fly (January 23, 2019)
Frances has just dropped off her baby girl at college and looks past her husband with a vacancy in her eyes that shows only a fraction of the void she feels in her broken heart. Greg looks on the bright side, assuming there will be more sex with his wife now that the kids are out of the house. While this couple has had 18 years to prepare for this day, becoming “empty nesters” can feel like falling into a deep abyss of nostalgia, anxiety, and uncertainty.
Los Angeles Times (January 18, 2019)
The essentials: After dropping off their youngest child at college, Greg and Frances take a road trip to the Grand Canyon’s vertiginous Skywalk, a metaphor for the couple’s troubled marriage. The vacation takes an unforeseen turn when Frances announces that she is considering leaving Greg — a shocker for him. Can they cross their emotional divide or is the chasm between them too broad to broach?

The couple behind (and front and center of) THE EMPTY NESTERS, JW Walker and Pamela Gaye Walker certainly validate the adage "A couple that works together, stays together." With a working and personal relationship spanning decades, JW and Pam take time from their respective day jobs, (he producing at Disney/Pixar Studios, she running their Production Company Ghost Ranch Productions) to bring THE EMPTY NESTERS to the Zephyr Theatre (beginning January 17, 2019) a play they both have a heartfelt connection to.
The Tolucan Times (January 4, 2019)
